Many people are curious about the signs surrounding Jesus’ Second Coming. Throughout history, wars, famines, and natural disasters have often led people to ask if the end times are near. But how should we interpret these events in light of Scripture?
Understanding the Signs
In Matthew 24, Jesus gives a detailed account of what will happen before His return. He mentions wars, famines, earthquakes, and the rise of false prophets. These are often referred to as “the birth pains” (Matthew 24:8)—a reminder that while they are alarming, they are not the final chapter.
It’s important to remember that while these events signal the general atmosphere of the end times, they are not necessarily specific markers that the end is immediate. Jesus warns against setting dates or being led astray by those who claim to know the exact time (Matthew 24:23-25).
Signs of Spiritual Deception
Another key sign of the end times is spiritual deception. Jesus warned that many false messiahs and prophets would arise, deceiving even the elect if possible (Matthew 24:24). Today, we see the proliferation of false teachings, and it can be easy to get caught up in movements or doctrines that distort the Gospel.
The Apostle Paul adds to this by speaking of a “great rebellion” or apostasy that will occur before the Lord’s return (2 Thessalonians 2:3). These spiritual deceptions emphasize the importance of remaining rooted in Scripture and discerning the truth.
Stay Awake and Prepared
Rather than fixating on the exact timeline of events, Jesus’ instruction to us is clear: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:42). We are to stay spiritually alert, watching and praying, ensuring our hearts are aligned with His will.
While the world may seem chaotic and uncertain, the believer can take comfort in the promise that Jesus will return, not in fear but in glory, bringing the ultimate victory over evil. Let us remain vigilant, hopeful, and ever ready to meet our Savior.
